UFC on Fox 9

UFC on Fox 9 happened last night and it was a very fun, action packed card. It was a card full of the lighter weight classes and I didn’t even notice. Normally, the UFC will have at least one heavyweight slugfest on the fight card. But, they left this one to the lighter weight classes and the card was action packed.

The flyweight(125 lbs) title was defended by Demetrius Johnson against Joseph Benevidez. They fought 15 months ago for the title and it was a close fight that Johnson pulled out. In this fight, Johnson left nothing to chance, dropping Benevidez with a clean right hand in the first round. Johnson pounced and got 4 or 5 blows in before the ref could step it. It was a big win for Johnson, cementing himself another dominate champion in the UFC.

The co-main event was basically a number one contenders match in the bantamweight (135 lbs) division. Urijah Faber took on the young and up and coming Michael McDonald. Well, old school won, with Faber dazing McDonald in the second round. From there, Faber blitzed McDonald, eventually choking him out.

The rest of the main card featured fights that reached decision. Chad Mendes picked up a lackluster win in the featherweight (145 lbs) division over Nik Lentz. This fight could have landed Mendes a title shot, but I think he will need one more win now to get it. In the kick off fight, Joe Lauzon picked up a huge win over Mac Danzig in the lightweight (155 lbs) division. A loss probably would have cost Lauzon his job in the UFC.

There is one more fight card for the UFC this year, December 28 in Las Vegas. The UFC 168 card is headlined by two championship rematches. Anderson Silva tries to recapture the middleweight (185 lbs) title from the man who knocked him out, Chris Weidman and in the co-main, Rhonda Rousey tries to defend her title against Miesha Tate. These two women don’t like each other, and this fight should be awesome. Can’t wait.
