New Comic Book Day

Well, guess what day it is? Yup, you got it, it’s NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! Yeah it’s my second favorite day of the week, besides Friday. Lol. Another banner week for me. I got five books this week, all titles that I look forward to reading.

20131218-194130.jpgMy favorite book right now is East of West, written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Nick Dragotta. It is easily the best new comic of 2013. It’s a book of an alternate future, where the United States is separated into 7 kingdoms. The rulers of these 7 kingdoms follow The Message, which will lead to the apocalypse and the end of the world. The dialogue in the book is amazing and Dragotta’s art really sets the scene. I can’t recommend this book enough.

20131218-195823.jpg Ten Grand, written by J. Michael Straczynski and drawn by C.P. Smith, is a dark book about heaven and hell, angels and demons. It’s about a former hitman, Joe, who makes a deal with an angel to do her bidding to spend 5 minutes with his deceased girlfriend. He investigates demonic scenarios and each successful job gets him those 5 minutes with his beloved. It’s different than a lot of comics, with funky art that just fits the tone of the book.

20131218-200652.jpg Another very strong title that I got this week is Superior Spider-Man, written by Dan Slott and drawn by Humberto Ramos. Dan Slott has taken Spider-Man and really changed the dynamic of Peter Parker’s world. See, Peter Parker is no more. He is actually one of his greatest foes, Doc Ock. Doc Ock switched brains with Peter, trapping Peter in Doc Ock’s dying body. It’s crazy out of the box thinking and it’s really worked. I have loved what Slott has done and can’t wait to see what he springs on us next.

20131218-201516.jpg Mark Waid and Javier Rodriguez have really elevated my all time favorite character, Daredevil. They have taken Daredevil from a brooding character always trying to make amends for past deeds into a character who is trying to make a better tomorrow. I have really enjoyed their take on the character and really look forward to each new issue.

20131218-202214.jpg Last! but certainly not least! Is the strongest of them all, The Indestructible Hulk. Another book penned by Mark Waid. The Hulk has also evolved. Well, Bruce Banner, really is the one that has evolved. Banner has teamed with S.H.I.E.L.D. to build new world changing inventions. In return, Banner unleashes the Hulk on targets selected by S.H.I.E.L.D.

Well, that’s it for this week. With five great books this week, picking a book of the week is going to be tough. Well, let me get to reading. Laters.
