Space Dandy premiere on Toonami

20140105-094452.jpgLast night, I was up watching tv. I was in hopes of catching the season 4 premiere for the Boondocks but that wasn’t meant to be. Since I was up, I figured I would catch this new anime, Space Dandy.

Now, I am a huge fan of anime. I have been since seeing Starblazers and Robotech as a kid. I always try to catch the newest stuff when it comes out. Space Dandy is really special because it is one of the few anime to premiere on American tv. Anime usually premieres in Jon, then comes to the States months later. And Toonami had been giving this show a pretty big push, so I was interested to see what the hype was about.

Well, I was disappointed. It just wasn’t what I was expecting. The animation was BEAUTIFUL. It’s one of the big reasons I love anime. The story, not so much. The premise of the show is a guy and his robot trek thru space, looking for undocumented alien races. Once they find these unknown races, they get paid. The premise is interesting enough, but so far the execution, not so much. They are going for a funny, adolescent feel for the show. And I guess they have accomplished that. But, I just have seen it done better on other anime. I will probably watch the next few episodes, to see if it gets better. We shall see. Space Dandy airs Saturday nights at 11:30 on the Cartoon Network. Check it out, and let me know what you think. Laters
