VixenVarsity Has Teamed Up With @AliveOnPurpose

Today I chatted with the team from AliveOnPurpose due to the previous post on Black men, Depression and Suicide. A couple back and forth messages and I just KNEW that this was something that the team here at VixenVarsity HAD to do.

About Alive On Purpose, their website states:

Alive On Purpose is dedicated to bringing awareness to the world through suicide prevention and purpose discovery. Our enhanced self-development programs, powerful social media campaigns, and dynamic outreach programs enhance life in our communities and the very people we encounter daily. You will find the empowerment you need to live each day alive with full potential, passion and possibility. We at Alive on Purpose believe that when a person understands fully why they live (purpose) they will refuse to fall victim to life’s circumstances.

With all of our efforts we aim to equip people everywhere to discover purpose, increase their potential, and live in today’s society fully activated and engaged in their lives

    Their Suicide Iniatives:

Here at Alive On Purpose we value life and believe that our direct partnership with the plan aimed at suicide prevention, lead by former US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, we are able to directly support four of the eleven listed goals.

• Develop broad-based suicide prevention support;
• Develop and implement suicide prevention programs;
• Implement training to recognize at-risk behavior and
• Improve access to, and community linkages with mental health and substance abuse services;

    Their Suicide Efforts:

Our comprehensive local prevention and early intervention efforts focus on NSSP Objectives two, four, six, and eight, with special emphasis on assistance in matters involving grief, as well as youth issues within low income, at-risk communities where the vast majority of the population suffering from issues leading to suicide cannot afford, and generally have limited to no access to, suicide prevention and intervention resources. We strongly emphasize primary prevention and early intervention. Program activities will focus on awareness and intervention.

We work with individuals, families, schools, community and faith-based organizations to raise the level of community awareness of early warning signs, and prevention and reporting techniques for suicide prevention.

When I read this, all I could do was smile, THIS is what I wrote that article for. THIS! I want to be able to spread help throughout various black communities and help prevent, bring other family members and friends to be AWARE of the symptoms, the signs. To help those who have issues that THEY can be aware of the signs. To NOT just brush it off and suck it up. Stuffing issues down inside of you only leads to more damage. Being diagnosed with Dysthymia Depression and being made aware of what kind of mental illness I have and to realize and have this “oh shit. I need help, bad.” moment. It’s a seed that has been planted inside of you growing and festering for years, decades…and you never KNEW because you thought that’s what you HAD to do!

Dysthymia Depression: Dysthymia (dis-THIE-me-uh) is a mild but long-term (chronic) form of depression. Symptoms usually last for at least two years, and often for much longer than that. Dysthymia interferes with your ability to function and enjoy life. With dysthymia, you may lose interest in normal daily activities, feel hopeless, lack productivity, and have low self-esteem and an overall feeling of inadequacy. People with dysthymia are often thought of as being overly critical, constantly complaining and incapable of having fun.
