In today’s installment of black characters in comics, I am going to talk a little bit about the first major costumed black character with DC comics, John Stewart. Stewart was the third Green Lantern from Earth, serving as back-up to Hal Jordan, the first Green Lantern from Earth.
John Stewart made his debut in Green Lantern vol. #2, issue 87 in 1972, created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams. He is a former Marine who is currently an architect. In the beginning, Stewart and Jordan didn’t get along, because Jordan didn’t like Stewart’s attitude towards authority(which is crazy, because Jordan really isn’t one to follow orders). They developed a respect for one another, which turned into a strong friendship. Stewart has had many ups and down as a Green Lantern, but has always come thru when the chips are down.
John Stewart has played a pretty prominent role in the DC universe since his creation. He has been involved with all of the Green Lantern major stories, and has been a member of the Justice League. Stewart was the selected by DC to represent the Green Lantern Corps. in the Justice League cartoon, and later in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon. Stewart is easily the biggest profile black character in the DC universe. You can learn more about him at here
