Get the Face: Classic Smokey Eye

kelly-rowland-smokey-eyeAs a Makeup Artist one of the most requested looks I get is for a “smokey eye”, like Kelly Rowland’s sulty look from last year’s BET awards. You to can recreate this sultry look perfect for a date night or partying.

As always you want to start with a clean, moisturizer and primed face. Once you have done that and given you primer a few minutes to sink into your skin, you’ll want to start on your eyes first. This being, a dark smokey look, there could be some fall out by doing your eyes before you foundation you will cut down on the amount of clean up you have to do afterwards.

To start you eyes off you want to filled in and clean up your eyebrows with a brow pencil and a little concealer. Next apply a eye shadow  primer ( like Urban Decay’s Primer Potion) on you lid slightly into your crease. Then apply a black or gray cream shadow to your lid (try NYX  jumbo pencils in Black or Slate or MUFE’s  Flash color in black). Blend away any harsh lines with a fluffy crease brush ( such as MAC’s 224 brush) and a matte shadow close to your complexion. Apply a shimmer black, grey or similar color to your lid ( Urban Decay has several great colors in their Vice palette perfect for this look.) Also smudge some of this shadow on your lower lash line. Blend out any harsh lines. Apply your favorite black eyeliner and mascara, for an extra pop add a set of false lashes. Clean up any fall out with a makeup wipe and let’s move on to foundation!
Kelly’s skin is really flawless, yet her foundation isn’t too heavy or dramatic. Apply a dewy medium coverage foundation (such as NARS sheer glow or MUFE’s HD foundation) with a damp blender sponge (can be found at Sephora, Ulta or MAC) making sure you blend into the hair line and well in to you jawline. You foundation should match perfectly and blend seamlessly into the skin. Brighten and conceal your undereye area with a concealer a one shade lighter then your complexion. Apply with you fingers to “warm up”  the concealer then blend into foundation with you blender sponge. Set concealer with a translucent powder, then set your foundation with a powder such as MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish to give your skin a natural glow. Add a pink blush to the the cheeks, like NARS’ Orgasm blush or MAC’s LoveJoy blush.
To finish the look off apply a lip liner your skin complexion to your lips followed by a pinky nude lipstick (like MAC’s Modesty) and a sheer matching lipstick gloss (like NYX Mega shine lipgloss in Natural). To ensure you makeup lasts all night apply a setting spray such as Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray.
