20140223-214005.jpgIn today’s edition of Blacks in Comics, going to talk about Gabriel “Gabe” Jones. Gabe Jones was created by Jim Lee and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics. He debuted in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1(May 1963).

Gabe Jones was a member of the elite World War II fighting squad, the Howling Commandos. He is a close confidant of the squads leader, Nick Fury. He was also a member of the squad during reunion missions during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Later, Jones became a member of the world piece keeping force, S.H.I.E.L.D..

Gabe Jones has appeared on the cartoons Super Hero Squad, Avengers:Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and The Incredible Hulk. He also was in the live action TV movie Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Jones was in the Captain America: The First Avenger, portrayed by Derek Luke.

Gabe Jones was the first black character I saw in a comic book. One of the first comics my dad ever bout me was Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. That’s what happens when you grow up a military brat. I definitely geeked out when I saw him in the Captain America movie.
