Women in Comics: Black Canary

20140305-080137.jpgBlack Canary is today’s topic for my Women in Comics post. Black Canary was created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino for DC Comics. She debuted in Flash #86(August 1947).

There have been two characters to go by the name Black Canary. During the Golden Age, Dinah Drake was the Black Canary. She was a superb hand to hand combatant who often posed as a criminal to help take down criminal organizations. She worked with her husband, Gotham City detective Larry Lance to fight crime. She was a member of the Justice Society of America, the first super hero team in comics.

The second character to go by Black Canary is Dinah Laurel Lance, the daughter of the original Black Canary. This Black Canary is a martial artist who has a super power, what she calls the “Canary Cry”. She has been a member of the Justice Society, the Justice League, and the Birds of Prey. She has also been linked to Green Arrow, as a partner, lover, and eventually as his wife. Black Canary has proven herself to be a strong leader, as she has lead the Justice League and Justice Society.

Black Canary has appeared in various cartoons and tv shows, including Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and The Bold, Smallville, Birds of Prey, and currently Arrow.
