Women in Comics: Wasp

20140306-212619.jpgWasp is today’s featured character for my Women in Comics post. Wasp was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics. She made her first appearance in Tales to Astonish #44(June 1963).

Wasp, whose real name is Janet van Dyne, became the Wasp after her father was murdered by an alien he had unleashed during one of his experiments. She went to Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym for help to avenge her father’s death. Pym performed a procedure on her, giving Janet the same size changing abilities Pym had, and also gave her the ability to produce stinger blasts. After they defeated the alien, Janet and Pym became crime busting partners, and eventually a romantic couple. They were founding members of the Avengers. Being in the Avengers caused a strain in their relationship due to Pym’s feelings of inadequacy. They eventually got past it, and Wasp has been one of the most decorated members of the Avengers. She has been one of the leaders of the group, leading them to many victories.

Wasp has appeared in many of the Marvel cartoons, and was one of the main characters on Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. She also was in the two Avengers animated films.
