Today I went out and saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This is going to be a spoiler free review. Just going to talk in general about what I liked and didn’t like. I will give a more in-depth review a little later that will include spoilers.
Let me start by saying I FREAKING LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! From the beginning to the end, I loved it. The story was amazing. The story really did a great job of capturing the essence of Captain America. There was great character development. The one thing I always worry about when it comes to blockbuster movies is big glaring plot holes. The kind of plot holes that prevent me from enjoying the movie. Well, there was none of that in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Everything flowed well, and each step led to the next thing. The story just really works, considering what Marvel has already established, and where we already kind of know they are headed.
The acting didn’t let the script down. Everyone was very good. The entire cast really embraced their roles. Chris Evans is a great Captain America. I didn’t think I would say that when he was first cast, but he has greatly exceeded my expectations. He really commands the screen, and you totally buy into him being Captain America. Anthony Mackie was amazing as the Falcon. I loved the origin they gave him, and he was a very good sidekick for Captain America. Scarlett Johansson was a little uneven to me in this movie as Black Widow. She was still good, but there were a couple of scenes where I didn’t really know what she was going for. Samuel L. Jackson of course just IS Nick Fury. That role was just made for him. Robert Redford is his usual amazing self as Alexander Pierce. He is the antagonist of the movie, not a role you often see Redford in, and after seeing this movie, it’s a role that Redford should play more often. The rest of the cast is equally as good.
Since Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a comic book movie, based on a super hero, nothing else will really matter if the action scenes don’t work. Well, the action scenes are breath taking. They just keep coming, and each one just escalates the story to another notch. Each fight scene is well choreographed, and hard hitting. There were a couple of times I was like “Ow, that has to hurt”. The explosive scenes were great, and the special effects didn’t let you down. Everything looked so real, and believable.
I can’t really nit pick too much with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The few jokes really fit, and I felt they really did an amazing job of moving the Marvel Cinematic Universe forward. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Tuesday, and in Avenger: Age of Ultron next summer. I have to say, you must see Captain America: The Winter Soldier ASAP. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. So go see it, like right now. Let me know if you love it as much as I do.
