On this day in 1962, Dwayne McDuffie was born. He went on to be one of the greatest and most influential comic book creators of all time. McDuffie’s greatest impact was on the cartoons that came from comics, and how they influenced us all and how we look at comics. McDuffie was involved in Static Shock, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10, Teen Titans, and What’s New, Scooby Doo. Here are my top 5 episodes of cartoons that McDuffie was involved in.
5. Justice League Unlimited “Question Authority”
This is the episode when Flash saves the day by defeating Brainiac and Lex Luthor. I love how Lex/Brainiac underestimate the Flash, and he uses his speed to take them apart.
4. Justice League Unlimited “Grudge Match”
This episode pitted the women of the Justice League against each other. It was one of the best fight scenes ever in a cartoon. To see Vixen, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Hawkgirl and Huntress go at it was pretty cool. Love this episode.
3. Static Shock “Gear”
In this episode of Static Shock, it is discovered that Richie Foley has developed powers due to his long-term exposure to the bang gas residue on Static. It was cool to give Richie powers and make him Static’s partner fighting the bad guys.
2. Justice League Unlimited “Destroyer”
This episode was the last episode of Justice League Unlimited. In a series that had many great fight scenes and many great lines, this one topped them all. Superman going to town on Darksied, and explaining what its like to be Superman still gives me goosebumps to this day. I love this episode. It was a fitting end to a great series.
1. Static Shock “Shock to the System”
This was the first episode of Static Shock and will always stand out to me for being first. It was the first show that had a black lead who was a super hero. It was different and gave a different perspective for the issues that were(are) going on in our world. For a children’s show, Static Shock addressed many social and economic that people of color can relate to. This show really opened some eyes and some minds to what is possible, and that is why its my top show.
