Well it’s that time again. Time to let the world know what movies I’m looking forward to in the new year. I did a list like this last year and while I didn’t see all of my picks it did help me to get excited for the upcoming movie year. Fair warning I am a huge comic book fan and this is a big year for comic book movies, but I’ll throw some other stuff in there for you so I dont look completely biased.
January 8th- The Revenant
Let’s be honest nothing really comes out in January usually it’s just the hold over from the holidays. Most are just wide releases of movies that tried to sneak in to make the deadline for awards season. That being said my first pick is exactly that. THE REVENANT!
When I first heard about the Revenant I wasn’t all that impressed, I thought the cast was great but other than that nothing grabbed me. Until I saw the trailer, and while this fits into the you gave a lot away in the trailer category it works for this film. Everything about this looks great the atmosphere, the characters, and the story. Plus this may be the role to finally gets Leonardo DiCaprio his Academy Award.
February 12th- DEADPOOL
I can honestly say that this is the first time in a long time I have been excited for Valentine’s Day weekend. This year I am expecting to get something I haven’t had in a long time. That’s right we FINALLY get the Deadpool movie. Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds as the resident Merc with a Mouth who must save his girlfriend from the same evil organization that gave him a healing factor at the cost of his body and sanity. This movie looks to be a fun action packed fourth wall breaking ride that lives up to its comic book namesake.
March 25th- Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
This is the movie is every comic book fan dreams of seeing. Two of the medium’s biggest icons in the same movie. The hype alone makes this one a must see plus the fact we will get our first looks at Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the beginning of the DC Cinematic Universe. Then there is the fact that it’s BATMAN VERSUS SUPERMAN!!!! enough said.
May 6th- Captain America: Civil War
Fresh off the heels of the Winter Soldier comes the next chapter in the Captain America saga. Unfortunately this time he has to go against Iron Man and not an evil S.H.I.E.L.D. to stand up for the beliefs he prides himself on. Similar to Batman V Superman this movie puts two of Marvel’s biggest icons against each other. Where it differs is that it will involve a lot of the Marvel heroes that have been introduced sense the Marvel Cinematic Universe started. Putting war in the tagline is not just a clever heading this movie will be an all out battle that will change the landscape of the Marvel movies to come for the foreseeable future..
May 27th- X-men: Apocalypse
When X-men: The Last Stand ended I thought the X-men franchise was dead. I just felt that weel had been tapped dry. Then I heard they would be going in the direction of exploring the X-mens origins I knew that they had run out of ideas. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The new trilogy that started with First Class completely changed everything and made the franchise feel fresh again. In the newest movie we finally get to see Apocalypse who only cares about one thing survival of the fittest. He will go to extreme measures to ensure that only those he deems worthy rise, and it’s up to the X-men to stop him even if it means going against figures from the X-men mythos who we recognize as friends.
June 24th-Independence Day: Resurgence
It’s been twenty year sense the original Independence Day changed the way we would look at Invasion movies. Gone is Will Smith and in his place is a new hero played by Liam Hemsworth. The new Independence Day will bring back many of the original cast members to battle the Alien threat from the first movie who have returned to take what they believe is rightfully theirs …THE EARTH! Resurgence looks to be a faithful sequel to the original movie and can hopefully bring back the amazement many of us felt when we originally saw Independence Day.
July 22nd-Star Trek:Beyond
The third Star Trek installment gives us a new director, a new villain, and a bit of a new look. Justin Lin of the Fast and the Furious franchise looks to inject Star Trek with a bit more Adrenaline focusing more on the planet exploration side of the franchise. The movie trailer makes me believe the movie is going back to its roots with a look similar to the television episodes. Heres hoping Lin can create an adventure that lives up to the new universe that JJ Abrams began in the first two movies.
August 5th- Suicide Squad
DC is ready to get their Cinematic universe started in a big way, Not only will we get the clash of titans in Batman V Superman, but will get a chance to see how things fair on the Villain side of things. Suicide Squad follows a team of super-villains who go on covert missions for the government in exchange for a lighter prison sentence. With an all-star cast that includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and Viola Davis as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, and Amanda Waller respectively DC finally looks to be ready to try an stop Marvel’s comic book movie dominance. I am also looking forward to seeing what Jared Leto does with the Joker and seeing Margot Robbie bring Haley Quinn to live action for the first time.
September 23rd- The Magnificent Seven
Let me start of by saying I am a huge fan of westerns and The Magnificent Seven is my all time favorite. I already view the movie as a classic, so hearing that it was getting a remake I was very apprehensive. That was until I heard that Antione Fuqua was going to direct with Denzel Washington in a lead role. The story revolves around a mexican village that hires seven guns for hire to protect them from a ruthless gang of bandits. Unfortunately there is no trailer or stills yet but with Fuqua at the helm for the action and Denzel Washington’s acting chops this one will be really good.
October 21st-Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
When the original Jack Reacher came out with Tom Cruise I didn’t expect much. Cruise has tried to establish himself as an action star for years. Outside of the Mission Impossible franchise he hasn’t really faired to well. That was until Jack Reacher came on the scene. I was pleasantly surprised when the original movie was released. I thought this would be like every other one man army action movie, but that wasn’t the case. Jack Reacher is the thinking man’s action hero. He also can throw down when the time comes which is a big reason why I can’t wait for the sequel. Never Go Back follows Jack as he return to his old unit headquarters just to find out he has been accused of a 16-year homicide. This one should be good Jack on the run was one of the best parts of the first movie and the fact he may be going up against others from his unit is icing on the cake.
November 4th-Doctor Strange
Now this is one from Marvel I have really been looking forward to. I am a huge fan of this character and I have been anxious to see what Marvel can do with true magic in the MCU. Doctor Strange is the story of a surgeon who after his wife dies and his hands are damaged he searches for the ancient one who teaches him the ways of magic to stop the evil Dormammu. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange and with an all star cast Marvel looks to usher in the next phase of heroes in style. Just from the pictures I have seen this one looks like it will be a Special Effects extravaganza in the best possible way. If Marvel doesn’t hold back they are looking at a sure-fire hit for the Holiday movie season.
December 16th-Star Wars: Rogue One
I almost want to say nuff said because if I don’t contain my excitement about this, the blurb im writing may get a little long-winded. I will try to contain myself. When Disney bought the Star Wars franchise we all knew things would change I just wasn’t expecting this. Fresh off the heels of the phenomenon that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes Rouge One the story of the band of rebels that stole the plans to the Death Star. I for one am just happy I’m getting another Star Wars movie so soon and don’t have to wait two years. Plus we get to visit an era in the movies that hasn’t been touched upon since A New Hope was first released. Will this movie be the juggernaut that A Force Awakens was, only time will tell. For now I’m just happy to get to ride this hype train one more time.
