Earlier this week MARVEL dropped a teaser with the tagline Injustice Like Lightning. There was a new character next to other silhouetted characters in what appeared to be a homage to Thunderbolts#1. Many fans began to suspect that this meant the team was coming back.
The next day there was another teaser this time founding members Moonstone and MACH-V were filled in.
Then on the third day Atlas and fixer were announced. This marked four of six founding members possibly returning to the team.
Finally today the final teaser was revealed showing none other than Captain Americas former partner turned assassin turned hero The Winter Soldier.
MARVEL announced that not only was the team returning, but the new Thunderbolts would be led by the Winter Soldier. Seeds of the new Thunderbolt team forming will take place in the “Avengers: Standoff” event taking place this spring. Something happens to splinter the three current Avengers teams which makes the Thunderbolts have to step in.
The original Thunderbolts debuted in 1997 and featured a team of villains who played at being good to lure the populace into a false sense of security in the wake of the “Onslaught” event. The kicker was that the villains began to like being heroes. The series will be written by Jim Zub and drawn by Jon Malin. They both feel that fans shouldn’t worry these are still some characters with a dark past who are looking to be good.
I for one am glad to see this book return. When MARVEL had there relaunch this past September I found it odd that the Thunderbolts weren’t present especially since it was their twenty year anniversary. I’m glad that they are getting a new book. The fact that the team is going to be led by Winter Soldier who also has a very dark past and is always looking for redemption is icing on the cake. Time will only tell how well he’ll mesh with his new team.
Be on the look out for “The Thunderbolts” this spring.
