Thirty years ago the original Ghostbusters was released and is widely considered one of the greatest comedies of all time. It has endeared itself to fans spawning a toy line, cartoons, video games and comics that have lasted to this day. When people heard that a remake was being made many were very apprehensive about how good it could really be. Even if it does feature some of the best comical actresses of this generation could it really live up to the stature that was the original. I’m here to let you know if it’s worth checking out
First things first I enjoyed the movie I think it was good and I was never bored. They mixed action with comedy well taking the franchise places I wasn’t expecting. The new Ghostbusters won’t be going on my all-time favorite movie list, but it was entertaining and a great way to kill two hours. Ghostbusters did a great job of mixing both practical and visual effects. In this day and age they could have easily just made all the ghost digital and been done with, but they actually used real actors with digital effect that meshed so seamlessly I couldn’t tell where the person started and the effect ended. I also found Chris Hemsworth and Kate McKinnon to be especially good both stole every scene they were in and were very funny. There was also a good bit of action which is something the original lacked and was a nice change of pace.
While the cast was funny they weren’t really funny together. They just lacked that chemistry that the original cast had. The original cast played off of each other and weren’t afraid to be the straight man in scenes the new cast seemed to always try to be the funniest person in the room. This took away from the final product and the team dynamic of the movie. Ghostbusters was also a bit too cartoony the characters seemed like just that characterizations I never really connected with anyone. Left me feeling that this was more of a cash grab then trying to be something new.
Once its all said and done the movie was a lot of fun, if you can distance yourself from comparing it to the original you’ll enjoy it. Ghostbusters will not be the cultural phenomenon that the original was, but it’s a nice addition to the franchise. If you have two hours to kill I highly recommend going to check it out.
Ghostbusters is in theaters now.
