Star Trek: Beyond Boldly Goes in a New Direction, and Creates Something New and Refreshing

Star Trek Beyond is the third installment in the new updated Star Trek franchise, and let me tell you they came into their own with this movie. Beyond is not your Dad’s Star Trek this is one of the most action packed Star Trek movies I have ever seen. I was very leery when I heard Justin Lin was taking over from J.J. Abrams. Abrams did what most said he couldn’t and created a great foundation for a new Star Trek Universe that kept elements of the original while still being new and exciting. Justin Lin did a great job with Beyond it was not Star Trek: Fast and Furious as some thought. He managed to create a movie that felt very close to the original Star Trek tv series and managed to feel refreshing and new.

Star Trek: Beyond played like an homage to the original series they didn’t rely on aliens or enemies they used in the past. Instead Beyond choose to create a new threat and story that took the crew of the enterprise out of their element and in new combinations and situations that worked to create a fun dynamic. There was action aplenty things never really slowed down or left you feeling bored Beyond came out the gate at full speed and never really slowed down. There were some scenes that left the crowd I was with clapping. This movie may have one of the best callback I’ve ever seen I won’t ruin it for you but when you see it you will be in awe.

Beyond is still the Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) show but all of the secondary crew members got a chance to shine especially Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban). He really came into his own in Beyond stealing just about every scene he was in. He got to be funny, reserved and even got a few action scenes. I hope in future movies they give him more back story on him because he seems like a very fun character in these movie.

Remember when i said the movie was face paced and the secondary members got a chance to shine. Yeah well that was a good thing and bad. The pacing was so frantic that the enemies while new didn’t get a chance to be fleshed out. Piece feel to let u know the back story but there was never a clear motivation for why the main villain did what he did. Krall is no Kahn while he is crazy to look at and intimidating he won’t go down as a major antagonist by any stretch of the mind. Jaylah another new character was also a victim of the lack of character development she had a great story there but we never really got to know her. She was more Dues Ex Machina than an actual character.
I highly recommend you go and check this movie out. While not as cerebral as previous Trek movies have been. Star Trek Beyond is fun and is a great jumping on point for those that may have felt the mythos of Star Trek were a little too daunting to get into.

Star Trek: Beyond is in theaters now.
