The Late Pass

“The Late Pass” is a category about things that I’ve found out about late, tv shows and movies that I never watched before, music I have never listened to, etc. If you have a late pass about something, post it in the comments!

So, the first installment of “The Late Pass” goes to me, SLEEPING and when I mean sleeping I mean in a COMATOSE STATE on this songbird, Elle Varner. I’ve heard “Refill” “I Don’t Care” but I just never thought enough to actually go out there and buy her CD. Truth be told, the only reason why I REALLY bought it is because I saw it on Amazon for $4. #DontJudgeMeDammit

When I put that CD in my truck, I promise you my truck just glided to every destination I went. There is NOT a song on Elle Varner’s Perfectly Imperfect that I skipped. NOT.A.ONE.

This album came out August 7, 2012 (been in a coma over a year, smh) and I JUST bought it on Black Friday, November 29th, 2013. WOW. If that’s not a “Late Pass”, then honestly I don’t know what is!

Elle Varner’s voice is just so full of soul, her songwriting kept me with her musical voyage. I related to every song. I LOVE that about music. No excessive cursing, no clothing brands mentioned, just perfect. Perfectly Imperfect…if you will. I can play this cd around my nieces, god children, nephews, my mom. It is such a DOPE album. The last time I felt this way about an album that I slept on that was just perfect was none other than Jilly from Philly!

This album here. *clutches my pearls*, LISTEN…. but back to this beautiful Goddess, Elle Varner. Besides her soulful voice, this woman is just a damn GODDESS, like FORREALFORREAL!!!

Okay, the beauty, right? Mercy…okay let me stop crushing HARD on her. #HeyBoo tho.

Here’s Perfectly Imperfect’s tracklist

1. Only Wanna Give It To You feat. J. Cole
2. Refill
3. Sound Proof Room
4. I Don’t Care
5. Not Tonight
6. Leaf
7. Oh What A Night
8. Stop The Clock
9. Welcome Home
10. Damn Good Friends
11. So Fly

When I listen to tracks 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10, I think about that special someone in my life and it just makes me smile and reminisce on who we are as a couple and how we are as friends and just how special this person is to me. Elle’s songwriting paints just THEE perfect picture. Tracks 7 and 11, lemmetellya I bounce soooo hard and sing/scream on the top of my lungs. HA! Those are my JAAAAAMMMMSSSSS! Her other tracks are sooo dope. This album is for ME, the crème de la crème.

Elle Varner is ONLY 24, she’ll be 25 on February 12th. (My birthday is February 11th, HOWEVER, I won’t be 25 lol) Elle being 24 years old and this as her first album? I feel it in my pinky toe there is going to be SO MUCH MORE of this level of just awesomeness from her.

She’s an Aquarius, so she rules ANY damn way! Seriously, if you have NOT picked up this album, make sure that you go check it out! Don’t worry, I won’t give YOU “The Late Pass”…unless, of course, you don’t check it out for yourself!

American Horror Story: Coven Episode 9 “Head”

american horror story coven

I have been an American Horror Story fan since Season 1, with the “House”, here we are 2 seasons later and Ryan Murphy has brought American Horror Story: Coven.

These 3 powerhouses above? Angela Basset, Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates, these ladies are the SH*T!!! So much power, so much talent, that every episode leaves you wanting more. Tonight’s episode. “Head” Whoo. I am just coming down from this high, actually, no I’m still mid level high.

Last week’s episode left us with Kathy Bates character, Madame LaLaurie, with her *SPOILERS AHEAD* head in a box.

american horror story

I actually like Justin Timberlake’s D**K in a box, but I digress.

If you haven’t caught up with this episode by now, then I gotta tell you to do NOT pass go or scroll on down. *SPOILERS BELOW* Seriously, I’m about to post spoilers and I don’t want to read any complaints on this post.

Final Warning…..

LemmeTellYa how this episode had me tweeting OHHHHHHHH SH**************TTTTTTTT!!!!! Yeah seriously. Expletives everywhere! Cordelia’s hubby, Hank, we found out that he’s a witch hunter. Say whaaaatttttttt. Yep. Remember when her husband was screwing a redhead then blew her brains out? Red was a witch. This episode “Head” showed in the beginning how as a child, his father was teaching him how to kill a witch. Little Hank couldn’t bring himself to pull the trigger, so dear old dad, got burned on his hand and shot the witch right in the head. His pops is now the head of the witch hunters club. As a child, his father was disappointed in Hank and even til this day, he was disappointed.

So, Cordelia is “blind as a butter knife” Myrtle said this, but what in the hell does that mean? Eh, whatevs. While we’re catching up on the family reunion with Hank, it was revealed that the Hunters Elk Club approved the acid throwing incident on Cordelia. Damn. Her father-in-law hates her, big time, huh?

Myrtle bestowed upon Cordelia the gift of sight, which, ewwwww by the way. She took out a melon spoon and scooped out the eyes of the Council and plugged them into Cordelia sockets. With her pretty 2 different eyeballs, Cordelia lost the gift of seeing. Myrtle chopped up the Council, another pretty gross scene.

Fiona goes to Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau, to talk to her about the witch hunters in the area. Little does Fiona know, Marie hired Hank. (hope you’re keeping up) Fiona brings back the head in the box to Marie Laveau, she instructs Queenie to burn it. Queenie doesn’t, she shows LaLaurie or Delphine a Roots marathon lmaooooo the whole interaction was hilarious. Delphine let’s Queenie know that she didn’t watch a damn thing and kept her eyes shut, Queenie “figured” she would because she’s kept her eyes shut for so long (Racism), so she decided to put on a song, forcing LaLaurie/Delphine to listen to the spiritual (and civil rights anthem) “Oh Freedom” which ironically cuts to black people being killed in the salon, by Hank.

Hank, pissed off because he has daddy issues, goes to Marie Laveau’s salon and blows everyone away. Queenie got shot in her gut. I would feel sorry, but she’s a traitor soooo OH WELL! When Hank finally reaches Marie Laveau, he shoots her, clips her arm (which by the way, you shot everyone and their mom in the gut, but you somehow miss and clip her arm. GTFOH) and slithering on the floor is Precious Queenie, who has a gun and gets as close as she can to Hank and before he can blow away Marie, Queenie puts the gun in her mouth and blows her head off which in turn blows Hank’s head off. Is Queenie dead? Not sure, I’m pretty sure she survived…after all she is the living voodoo doll.

The episode ends with Marie Laveau knocking on the Coven’s door and Fiona letting her in.

That was heavy just reading it, right? Did you say OHHHHHH SHHHHH****TTTTTT when you read it? I bet you did. Now those parts of the episode really stuck out to me and I just *HAD* to get that off of my fingertips. The episode didn’t just center about the above, albeit it was the best part of the show, BUT, we found some other interesting tidbits.

Last week’s episode, we saw how Luke’s mother, Joan, told Luke needed to clean his insides and then she make a cleaning concoction water and a cleanser (comet, ammonia, bleach, fantastik?) and made Luke give himself an enema.

enema ahs luke

Well, we all knew that the Bible thumping broad was crazy, BUT we didn’t know HOW crazy she was…mannnn listen. Ok, so this week’s “Head” episode shows Nan, Madison and Zoe going to the hospital to see Luke, who was shot by Hank who’s a horrible witch hunter.

Anywho, the 3 amigas walk in, Joan tries to instantly kick them out. Nan does her Whoopi Goldberg, “Ghost” impression and tells Mommy Dearest some things that made her believe that Luke was still in there, listening. She let’s Nan in and next thing you know, Luke/Nan is delivering a message from GOD and it was revealed that Joan, killed her husband because she saw hubby getting head from a chick in Joan’s book club. Anger and revenge set in and she put bees in his car, knowing he’s allergic and he gets stung to death. Luke/Nan tells Joan that God is judging her for it and Joan goes all defensive, liar, blah blah blah. Nan leaves poor Luke alone and leaves the hospital. Luke somehow comes out of his coma (Nan’s powers?) and he’s all sobbing, you killed dad because he cheated on you. Mommy Dearest says oh it’s not true….go back to sleep Luke and Joan took a damn pillow and smothered Luke. This broad is CERTIFIABLE!!! We don’t know if he’s truly dead, but it left the impression. Seriously tho, who stays dead on American Horror Story: Coven?

New episodes start back January 8th! Yeah…wth? Almost a month. You can always get your refill of American Horror Story on Netflix, OnDemand or the FX website.

See you in 3 weeks!

New Comic Book Day

So, it’s Wednesday, and for those of you that don’t know, that means it’s new comic book day. Just like new music, DVDs, and blu-rays come out on Tuesday, new comics come out on Wednesday. Each week, I am going to talk about the books I got, and why I decided to get them. I read a lot of different things, from different genres of comics. I read some big hero books, I read some gritty stuff, some fantastical stuff, and some end of the world stuff. It crosses the entire gambit. In separate posts, I will talk about my book of the week, and other things you may want to check out. Ok, let’s get started.

This week, I got six books. Batman, Forever Evil Arkham War, Captain America, The Walking Dead, Lazarus, and Dead Body Road. This is about an average week for me. I usually get 3-5 books each week.

Batman, written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Greg Capullo, is the best book put out by DC right now. Scott Snyder is one of my favorite writers. He consistently puts out good books month after month. This issue continues the Zero Year story. In this story, he is delving into Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. The character development is outstanding, and really gets into the motivation of Batman and why he does what he does. Really good read.

Forever Evil Arkham War, written by Peter Tomasi and drawn by Scot Eaton, takes place during the big DC crossover event, Forever Evil. The heroes are gone, and this is what happens when the villains are left to unchecked. This particular storyline chronicles the villains battling for Gotham City. It’s a pretty action pack book, and a fairly fun read.

Captain America, written by Rick Remender and drawn by Carlos Pacheco, is all about the American super soldier, Steve Rodgers. This book has a mix of action and espionage. Really does a lot to show the human side of the character.

I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead, written by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Charlie Adlard. The zombie apocalypse is upon us, and how are you going to react is the premise. It follows a group of survivors as they learn to deal with the changing world, and how human interaction has changed. Really heavy on character development, you really get close to the characters. You are kept on the edge of your seat, and you never know what’s going to happen next. This book is a must read.

One of my surprise books of 2013 was Lazarus, written by Greg Rucka and drawn by Michael Lark. I picked this book up because I am drawn to post-apocalyptic stories. This book has not disappointed. It has given me a little of everything. Action, drama, character development, sci-fi aspects, just the list goes on. Really one of the best books out there right now.

The last book I got this week was Dead Body Road, written by Justin Jordan and drawn by Matteo Scalera. This is a new book, about a man looking for revenge on the people who murdered his wife. The art looks solid, and the storyline seems gritty. So, I will give it a try, and see how it goes.

Well, that’s it for my new comic books this week. I will be posting my book of the week soon, and look forward to sharing my love of comics with you all. Laters

Independent comics to read

What I am going to try to do in this post is give some suggestions on some really entertaining independent comic books. I will try to list something for everyone, and hopefully you can find something that will fit your fancy.

One of my favorite comic books is East of West, written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Nick Dragotta. It is a story about an alternate future where there was no winner of the U.S. Civil War, and the U.S. was separated into different territories. Now, the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse have come to bring to end of the world, except one is missing, Death himself. It’s an awesome book with action, drama, and just a really layered story. And the art really pops. Nick Dragotta really brings the characters to life, and each issue is a page turner. The series is currently at issue 7. I really recommend getting the trade paperback, which collects the first five issues. You won’t regret it

The Walking Dead is a really interesting take on a zombie apocalypse. In this book, Robert Kirkman takes you through how the world, and more importantly the people, will change if a zombie apocalypse were to occur. He does a tremendous job of character development, and really focuses on the relationships that are developed between the people in this world. Very good look at human nature and how people may react if the world they knew changed basically overnight. This series is up to issue 118. A good jumping on point is issue 115. But I really recommend investing in the compendiums or the trade paperbacks. You won’t be disappointed.

Morning Glories was something that I didn’t really think I would be interested in. I mean, most of the main characters are teenagers. Usually, not my cup of tea. This book surprised me. It’s really deep, with plenty of twists and turns. I often catch myself rereading sections, because I missed something. The depth of the book is amazing. This series is up to issue 32. I really recommend getting the trades, because you have to read everything to fully appreciate it.

Lazarus is another sneaky good read. I was surprised at how good it is. It’s another post-apocalyptic take on the world. In this one, the world is ruled by families, who have divided it up into territories. This book is full of intrigue and drama. With some good action thrown in. The art really fits the feel of the story. Don’t sleep on this one. This series is up to issue 5, with a trade paperback collecting the first four issues.

For something a little light and silly, I suggest Adventure Time. This book is all about the laughs, and lives up to it. If you like the show, you will love this comic. They definitely took the time to get the feel of the show, and they nail it.

There are a TON of other books out there, but I think this is a very good sorting point. These books will grab you and show that comic books aren’t just for kids. Laters
